Sophie Poost received the following email from Dan Jenkins on 7/3:

Dear Ms. Poost,

Thank you for reaching out yesterday. I am happy to provide an update of our conversations with folks in the district on HR555 and other bills that directly affect people with disabilities in Maine. I sat down with Disability Rights Maine along with our office???s District Director in May. It was a really productive conversation, we got to know them a little more (the Congressman himself had a previous relationship with some of the staff from his time in the state legislature, but it was nice for me to put a name to a face) and to discuss the priorities for Disability Rights Maine.

While DRM noted that they were in principle and in general supportive of HR555, they said that it was not a top priority for them at this time. They noted some serious workforce challenges and the difficulty of providing such services in our very rural communities. What they did highlight as their policy priorities were the Transformation to Competitive Employment Act (which, as you noted, the Congressman cosponsored) and two bills that, at the time of the meeting, had yet to be introduced ??? the Keeping All Students Safe Act to eliminate the use of restraints and seclusion for students in all public schools, and the Protection and Advocacy for Veterans Act, to improve the protection and advocacy system for veterans, in particular focusing on veterans with mental health and substance abuse issues.

These conversations were very helpful in understanding the priorities for the advocacy groups and leaders in the community. Kim at Disability Rights Maine knows that our door is always open and that we always want to hear what issues and priorities are on the forefront of their advocacy agenda.

Thank you for your advocacy on this issue. I hope you have a nice holiday and weekend.

Best,
Dan Jenkins

On July 2, Sophie Poost sent the following email to Dan Jenkins and Aisha Woodward:

Good Afternoon,

I was one of several ADAPT members that visited your office about a month and a half ago asking for Representative Golden???s support for the Disability Integration Act, also known as the DIA. Not having seen your name on Congress.gov, I???m wondering if you???ve determined what stance Representative Golden intend to take on HR. 555???the Disability Integration Act.

We are grateful that the Congressman has cosponsored HR.873, Transformation to Competitive Employment Act, ensuring disabled Americans have the opportunity to earn fair wages, however there???s still more to be done to ensure that people with disabilities can be truly equal. This is why it is imperative that Representative Golden join 230 other Representatives as a cosponsor to the Disability Integration Act, HR.555.

When history is made with the passage of the DIA, what side will Representative Golden be on?

Thank you for your time,
Sophie Poost

Eric Kanter responded by email:

Hi Ericka ???

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you ??? I am looping in my colleague Dan who handles civil rights issues for our office. He will take a look at the legislation and will follow up with any questions.

Best,
Eric

Hello Eric,

I called earlier to speak to you about H.R. 555, the Disability Integration Act. In the past few weeks, you have received multiple emails from ADAPT about the Disability Integration Act (HR 555), but we have not heard back from you and Representative Golden has not signed onto the Disability Integration Act yet.

Have you had a chance to review our emails?

ADAPT will be in town next week and we would prefer to stop by your office to thank Representative Golden for his support. It is critical that your office review the emails from ADAPT about the Disability Integration Act and get back to us about Representative Golden cosponsoring DIA before we arrive.

Thank you.

1/9/18-S. Poost and E. Jones met with their staffer Eric Kanter, he seemed pretty receptive, but seemed more interested in knowing constituent's thoughts.
