On 10/12/18 Laura sent email to Kaine's Chief of Staff, Mike Henry at email@example.com. Mike said they will be deciding on the bill when Senate is back in session in November.

On July 24th, 2018, NCIL Advocates Ed Turner, Krin Collins, Catherine Tyler-North, Tiffany Allison, and Katherine Gaines met with Sen. Kaine and staffer Karishma Merchant. Kaine acknowledged he has yet to sponsor the DIA and stated "we will work on that and get back with you."
Ellen Taverna writes on 7/18/2018 at 11:21AM:
Ellen Taverna along with a large group from the Autism Society of America Hill Day met with Cortney Segmen on 7/12. It was a powerful meeting with several autistic ASA members sharing their personal stories. We covered a lot of different issues and I brought up DIA. Cortney stated the DIA is a bill that Kaine would strongly support but expressed concern over the costs of this specific bill and that it was not bi-partisan. She also asked again about other versions of the bill floating around? I responded no. This was introduced by Senator Schumer and this is the only version. I also brought up the cost effectiveness of the bill (I cited the NCD numbers) as well as the reason why there is no CBO score. We raised this during our June meeting. During this meeting, she brought up Kaine's work as a civil rights attorney and I again mentioned DIA as a civil rights issue. After the meeting, Cortney told me she wasn???t sure about Kaine joining DIA if it???s not going anywhere this Congress. She urged me to attend Senator Kaine???s campaign events to try to get more face time with him. I mentioned his encounter with a Virginia constituent (NCIL staffer) about DIA and Kaine seemed supportive. Cortney said she hadn???t heard anything about this recent interaction with Senator Kaine but she???d be talking to him soon about the DIA.
Sarah Blahovec writes on 7/01/2018 at 12:45AM:
Sarah Blahovec spoke with Tim Kaine at New Leaders Council of Virgina launch event in Richmond, VA (non-disability event) on 6/30 (background: Kaine is national honorary co-chair of NLC; we are founding and launching his home state's chapter of the organization). During discussion, was able to bring up DIA by both name and Senate bill and citing the meetings done by ADAPT/NCIL/CDR earlier this week with Kaine staff, and he didn't seem to be familiar with it, asking whether it went through HELP or if it went through Finance committee because he thought it had to do with Medicaid. After this, he said that he was a "strong supporter" of the bill but I wasn't sure how much he remembered about the bill during our brief discussion and whether he was just trying to placate a constituent.
Ellen Taverna writes on 6/29/2018 at 10:26AM:
Ellen Taverna, Stephanie Woodward and Gregg Beratan met with Courtney Segmen on 6/27. We emphasized how many times ADAPT/NICL/CDR and various VA groups have met w/ Kaine???s staff re: the DIA. Ellen as a VA constituent expressed concerns about her 6 yr old autistic son w/o DIA in place in VA. Courtney apologized for the past delays in bringing this to Senator Kaine (she started in February). She asked about similar bills being introduced but we went through any possible confusion of different bills and reiterated this version is not substantively different than earlier version only some clarifications were made. She brought up Kaine???s work on IDEA and employment opportunities but we responded that while these efforts are important, they won???t be accessible for many disabled individuals without the DIA. Courtney is doing a write-up on DIA and will be presenting it to Kaine after the July 4th holiday. We will follow up along with other groups in July. Ellen mentioned she would be meeting with staff again on July 12 for the Autism Society Hill Day and DIA is on the agenda.
Laura Halvorson writes on 6/26/2018 at 4:58PM:
6/12: Sheryl met with Cortney Segman, a healthcare policy legislative correspondent, and Laura joined by phone as a constituent.
Sheryl gave DIA packet and Laura gave NCD cost share analysis and gave Harris poll stats on how many people prefer HCBS opposed to institutions as these were 2 questions she had. Both Laura and Sheryl gave their personal stories.
DC Metro ADAPT members and other Virginia advocates should be contacting Kaine's office today too and awaiting to see how many reached out. Laura got confirmation that the ED of ARC of Northern Virginia emailed Kristen Molloy (Sr. Health Policy Advisor) and forwarded email request to ARC of Virginia ED to get folks in their networks to contact Senator Kaine's office to cosponsor DIA too.
Cortney said to follow up with Kaine's office first week of July: Cortney_Segmen@kaine.senate.gov
Laura Halvorson writes on 6/11/2018 at 6:33PM:
6/11: Laura left a voicemail and sent an email with Kaine's Senior Healthcare Policy Advisor Kristen Molloy asking where they are at on cosponsoring the bill. Mentioned list of supporters including Center for American Progress and that Senator Murray and several other HELP members are on the bill.
Sheryl G from NCIL will meet with staff tomorrow in DC and I have reached out to ADAPT members and advocates in Virginia with a call/email script to share with others to contact Kaine's office tomorrow 6/12. Important to note tomorrow is Virginia's Primary Election also.
Laura Halvorson writes on 2/28/2018 at 8:35PM:
2/27: Laura accompanied by Elena Hung from the Little Lobbyists met with health staffer Kristin Malloy. Previously in August Sheryl and Laura met with Nicholas (healthcare, immigration) and Portia (disability issues) and talked about DIA. Elena has talked to Tim Kaine himself on DIA in their last meeting as well.
Need constituents and VACIL to reach out to his office to encourage cosponsorship.
